“The bass drop is so sick” có nghĩa là gì?

Khi nghe các bài nhạc dubstep, mình thường thấy những comment kiểu như:

“Looooove this tune! The bass drop is so sick!…”

Theo như mình biết thì sick có nghĩa tiêu cực. Trên trang Merriam-Webster, sick được định nghĩa là “affected with a disease or disorder” ( bị ảnh hưởng bởi 1 căn bệnh hoặc chứng rối loạn), cả thể chất lẫn tâm hồn.

Tuy nhiên, câu comment trên nghe lại có vẻ rất tích cực ( mặc dù sau đó có những câu như “…my ears were bleeding”.

Có ai hiểu nghĩa câu này không? Giải thích mình với. Tks =))

Phải nói là câu hỏi của bạn khá hay đó. Câu “ The bass drop is so sick” là slang ( tiếng lóng).

Slang là những từ được sử dụng trong tiếng Anh giao tiếp. nó không đòi hỏi phải đúng ngữ pháp, cho phép bỏ qua hoặc thêm từ mà không cần theo một quy tắc nào cả, và quan trọng nhất, nó cho phép từ có nghĩa hoàn toàn không liên quan gì đến nghĩa thông thường. Những nghĩa này của từ phát triển theo thời gian và không có nguồn gốc rõ ràng.

Mình có thể lấy cho bạn ví dụ về một số từ lóng khác trong tiếng Anh có nghĩa là “very good”, “impressive” như:

  •  wicked
  • awesome
  • boss
  • crazy
  • ridiculous
  • nasty
  • sick-nasty   (a personal favorite)

Từ điển New Oxford American Dictionary có 1 phần ghi chú về sick:

“ Một thủ thuật thường dùng trong tiếng lóng là đảo nghĩa, do đó 1 số từ mang nghĩa tiêu cực lại được dùng để miêu tả sự tích cực, vd như badwicked, được dùng với nghĩa tích cực từ năm 1897 và 1920. Từ sick mới bắt đầu được xem là từ đồng nghĩa của excellent hoặc very impressive từ năm 1983. “It was a sick party and there were tons of cool people there.” Từ này đặc biệt hay dùng trong trượt ván và trượt tuyết, khi đó, nó ám chỉ một yếu tố nguy hiểm và rủi ro: “Shawn is a badass skater. He busts some sick tricks.””

Hình như mình tìm thấy câu trả lời rồi, từ khóa ở đây là  antagonym hoặc contranym. Đây là những từ có nghĩa trái ngược với chính nghĩa của nó. Mình đã tìm được 1 bài viết với một danh sách những từ như thế. Nhưng mình chỉ đưa ra những từ thông dụng để các bạn khác tham khảo thôi nhé:

Apparent: Not clear or certain (“For now, he is the apparent winner of the contest.”) vs. Obvious (“The solution to the problem was apparent to all.”)
Assume: To actually have (“To assume office”) vs. To hope to have (“He assumed he would be elected.”)
Bad: There is the normal meaning and the slang meaning of “good” (sometimes pronounced baadfor emphasis).
Clip: to attach vs. to cut off
Cool: positive sense (“cool web-sites”) vs. negative sense(“cool reception”).
Effectively: in effect (doing the equivalent of the action but not the real thing) vs. with effect (doing the action and doing it well). Contrast “he is effectively lying” with “he is lying effectively”.
Fast: Moving rapidly vs. Unable to move (“I was held fast to my bed.”)
Fix: to restore to function (“fixing the refrigerator”) vs. to make non-functional (“fixing the dog”)
