HoYoverse, the developer behind Honkai Impact 3rd and Genshin Impact, recently unveiled a series of concept art showcasing the design evolution of Welt Yang, a beloved character featured in both Honkai Impact 3rd and their latest game, Honkai: Star Rail. The final rendition of Welt Yang, which emerged as a result of this iterative process, became a pivotal figure in the turn-based combat gameplay of Honkai: Star Rail, released in April.

Honkai Impact 3rd, originally launched in China in late 2016, followed by a release in the West 18 months later, shares some character connections with both Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. In the early stages, the design direction for Welt Yang was centered around portraying his maturity and composure, resulting in a predominantly dark outfit. However, as the design evolved, the developers sought to emphasize his elegance by introducing a variety of colors to his ensemble, presenting him with a longer, more formal jacket. Subsequent revisions made his coat darker, complemented by a gray scarf. Ultimately, the final design settled on a sleek gray coat, accompanied by casual pieces to reflect the character’s pragmatism.

Despite his background being thoroughly explored in the Honkai Impact 3rd manga, Welt Yang made his appearance in the RPG itself only during the mid-game. However, due to his popularity or other reasons, HoYoverse decided to provide him with more screen time and enhance his capabilities in Honkai: Star Rail. This decision turned teams featuring Welt into formidable squads, greatly contributing to the enjoyment of the latest game.

While playing Honkai Impact 3rd will offer players numerous callbacks in Honkai: Star Rail, experiencing the former is not a prerequisite for enjoying the latter. Honkai: Star Rail deviates from its predecessor’s ARPG gameplay, introducing turn-based combat and providing players with an entirely fresh and distinct experience.
